Rookie - Switching to Reef from fish only

You still haven't told me how the rock was aquired. Does the rock have coraline color on it or is it brownish / grayish? was there a lot of junk on the rock when you put it in or was it clean? If there is no increase in ammonia levels within three to four days then it is unlikely there will be.

Rookie - Switching to Reef from fish only

So how did you aquire the rock? Is that a foxface in the picture of your tank? Not reef safe. If you picked up the rock locally and did not have it out of water very long then you may not have to cure it at all and thus do not need to wait. It is the die off that creates the ammonia spike. That...

Rookie - Switching to Reef from fish only

Your lfs is correct in that you can cure rock this way - how long it will take depends on how much die off there was. Did you buy the rock locally or have it shipped in? With a quick ship rock that was pre cured you can estimate three weeks give or take to be safe. If this was locally bought and...

    Yellow tang

were these guys removed from the tank while you rearranged the rocks? At the very least I would remove the aggressor and try it that way. As far as how long to wait.. that is pretty much a judgement call for you to make. Do you wait until there is injury? or do you get one out asap? One more day...

    anenomies

if you can post a pic that would be a big help. Do a search for "aptasia", if that's what you have they are a pest. There are numerous threads you'll find with details on how to get rid of them. If that is not what you have then give us a good description or post pics.

    Tang question

If you must add another tang the general rule is that if it does not share the same body type/shape they will not normally have any problems. Otherwise they need to be introduced to the tank at the same time and have ample room to swim.

    Which kind?

the bubble tip anenome (BTA) is the most popular choice and seems to be more attractive to clowns also. I think the 2nd choice would be a Long Tentacle Anenome (LTA)

    Large Tank Set-Ups

I put a 50ga sump on my 130 tank with a 1200gph overflow I put a 75ga sump on my 225 tank with drilled 1 1/2" out and four 1" returns As far as skimmers are concerned that is open to debate - I have had good results with some less expensive models such as Seaclone but that is budget dependant...

    S.G Difference for acclimation

It is always best to do a drip acclimation when you have such a difference in SG so IMO I would advise that you not chance it.

    Zoo Problem

Post all of your water parameters - check the temperature, overheating is often a cause for "melting" - if that's not it maybe your param's can give us a clue

    True Number of Gallons

You are correct in that the volume is stated by it's empty cubic capacity. The displacement by the sand and rock as you stated is approximately 13 gallons leaving you volume at 62 ga. This is assuming your tank is 48" x 18"

    help me please

It's a common mistake that will probably not cost you if you monitor PH As far as being stupid...NAH... I would only call you that if you didn't learn from your mistakes.

    Nitrate with LR

How long ago did you put the new LR in ? The addition of the rock and the fish will cause an increase in the bioload and thus a temporary spike in the nitrates - if it does not level back out then you will need do water changes. If it was added some time ago then there could possibly be another...

anemones and corol, can they live together?

Some anenomes are aggressive and will sting corals just as the corals may sting - I would not call this "chemical warfare" but you may want to check on the compatability of the specific anenomes that you have. Include the size tank in which they are being housed also.

live rock set on sand or on glass?

you will always have anaerobic areas in the substrate and they can be very beneficial - anaerobic bacteria colonies can perform the final step in the nitrification process ( converting nitrates into nitrogen gas) what you do not want are "dead" areas where there is little or no water movement -...

    R/O units

The only dumb questions are the ones not asked. RO units are used on the supply water system so that you have purified water to make your salt mixes with. They do not go directly on the tanks.

    help me please

When you mix the Kalk you do not want to use the white sediment that settles to the bottom - it's sounds like you have dumped it all in. For ideal results you need to follow the directions carefully. It will clear up in a while - you need to monitor your PH - it will spike and cause damage - you...

    perfect water

That temp is based on the majority of fish kept in home aquariums today - there are exceptions however, as I said, such as species that are deep water or from more northern areas where the temps are cooler. Generally, most of the tropical fish thrive in these temps
