When do I remove feather duster?

the best way to tell (although i would not do this offten) would be to gently push you r finger on the tube twards the bottom or unopen end. if the worm inside is alive he WILL move...mostly because he will be scared (hence the reasion why you shouldnt do this often) if he is alive he can regrow...

diatoms will not hurt anything durring you cycle. dont even bother with a water change. it will just make you cycle take longer.

    Are RI/DO Sytems Absolutely Necessary?

to test fresh water you could take the water to a good lfs and ask for a trAte, phosphate, pH test. i dont know of any water systems that have high leavels of amonia (unless your getting it from a stagnent source. I accually took my tap water and tested it with a fresh water test, then took it...

    Are RI/DO Sytems Absolutely Necessary?

i know that i will probably be flamed for this but i have never used an ro/di unit. the reasion is that i have had my city water tested and it comes out without nitrAte, silicates (sp), or phosphate. i live in cincinnati (and i hate it) but the water here is really good. p.s. in hobby for 5yrs...

    marine snow????

reef snow is like the ford of cars. it will get you where you are going (it does do a pretty good job) but its not a porche:) the problem with reef snow is that it isnt really alive. thats why dt's or live phydoplankton (sp?) are typicaly better for the tank.
