I bought my MH Retro today. Have a question

I would almost always have both fans blowing in, it will cool the water and the space in the canopy better. It is probably not a huge difference but I did see a small hobbiest do a study on it, they did it three ways, Both blowing in, both blowing out, and one blowing in/one blowing out, and...

    Aquarium safe epoxy (not putty)

I am looking for a product that I can use to glue lace rock to an overflow. This is a HUGE overflow, 22X10X48 (LXWXH). The owner wants the overflow completely disguised with lace rock. I do not want a putty, in fact I am trying to find a two part epoxy (liquid) that is safe, I assume that after...

    Noisy air going into sump

That is just how a sump is, all you can really do to quiet it is to slow the flow going through the sump. Or putting filter bags over your overflow tubes in the sump. Is this an internal overflow or a HOB? Did you use the pipe with all the holes in it in the overflow or did you build some...

    200 gal Opportunity

what else do you need to know? $700 sounds like a good price to me for all that stuff.

    Silica Sand

A lot of people read "silica" sand and imediately think of the silica that you find in water, that type of silica is food for diatoms and causes that particular nuisance. The silica based sand is no more likely to cause excess algae growth than the glass in your tank (which is silica based)...

    200 gal Opportunity

no way to know if the tank will leak unless you fill it with water and check it, but more than likely it is fine. check the seals closely and look for any problem areas. You could use the trickle filter it comes with, but if you want to use it as a reef tank I would think you would be much...

    WOO HOO I did it!!!

Freshwater dips are actually used by a lot of people for some external parasites. If you match the temp and pH, it is not as stressful but it is still stressful and there are other methods that work better, but in a situation where you need to give the fish some relief it can work. I don't like...

    Dead-rock

Well we we are talking about "live rock" we are talking about the bacteria that colonizes on it, and the small worms and pods that live in it. So basically anything you put in your tank that is porus, will become "live" your rock, your sand, it all has the capability to grow beneficial bacteria...

what is the lowest posibly sg a fish can live at

Well my first question is why do you ask? I know that they can live for quite a while at 1.009, but I wouldn't drop it too much lower than that. Or leave them at 1.009 for longer than needed for Hypo treatments.

    Any LFS owners here?

    The Future Of Saltwater Filtration???

just looks like a glorified skilter to me, nothing ground breaking. those sponges will just junk up and contribute to nitrates if you don't clean them frequently. Would have to see the skimmer in use to see if it is any good, it is not going to help at all with surface skimming and that is a...

    hagen test kits any good?

If you cannot afford Salifert than the only other cheaper kit I would recommend is SeaTest and FastTest. Hagen, Aquarium pharm, dip sticks, are all a waste of money IMO.

New Light Tubes May Be Making My Tank Too Warm

The tank is a cool water set-up for local marine animals and needs to stay between 60-70 degrees, ideally at about 64-66. read the post my friend Those DIY chillers just don't seem worth the cost unless you have a dorm fridge just laying around a knack for that kind of stuff.

New Light Tubes May Be Making My Tank Too Warm

I think you are going to have a hard time keeping a cold water tank without a chiller honestly. Might work in the winter when classrooms are kept cold, but what is going to happen in the spring/summer months. A fan might help, but adding another pump for the skimmer, and then if you add a sump...

Will hypo kill LR and LS?

Didn't in the tank I did it on, but it was a big tank, with a good filtration system on it.

Will hypo kill LR and LS?

I respectfully disagree with NM that it will "kill" your LR and LS, It will reduce the bacteria and will greatly reduce if not kill off most of the infauna (worms, pods etc.) in your tank, but some do seem to survive. But it will not completely kill everything off. I had to do it in a 210...

My 2 month old 54 gallon corner

I think some people are confused, What is in the tank is baserock, looks like Tuffa, The stuff in the rubbermaid is LR, and it looks fine, there will be plenty of coralline that will grow out of the LR that you have. I maintain about 7 tanks on the side. I think your guys is a little too...
