Anyone else have seahorses?

20 gallons is fine for seahorses, but vertical space is critical to their environment. A 20" tank depth is said to be the minimum, but the tank width does not matter. My wife actually breeds and raises them successfully; but has a couple of "seahorse only" tanks to do this. We did not have...

I had a similar disagreement with a Moray eel over who's tank it was several years ago. He won!

Wet/Dry...lets clarify this once and for all...

Well Jake, you are probably not going to get full consensus or final resolution on this here either; but here is my take on the subject: The article is true to the extent that a wet/dry is not NEEDED (assuming one has adequate lr, dsb, or equivalent bio. filtration)and a protene skimmer...

    PREMIUM FLORIDA KEYS LIVE SAND

I used some (100 lbs. mixed with 200 lbs of arragonite) in January when I converted to DSB. My opinion is that it is good quality, very white and seemed to be loaded with micro-organisms, but little or no visible 'creatures'.

    Nitrate????

Without understanding the specifics of your set-up (ie. how long, type of substrate, filtration, etc.) this question is dificult to answer. However, assuming that your tank has completed it's cycle; the most common reason for high nitrate is over feeding and/or build up of waist (detrius)...

Serpant Star eats my Bangaii Card

I have lost brittle stars and shrimp to my serpant star. It took me awhile to figure out who the culprate was but I'm fairly sure that the losses are the result of the serpant star.

    filter maintence

If this is the spounge after the bio-media it is your denitrifying (sp?) media intended to house anarobic bacteria that assist in removing nitrates. There should be another sponge or filter that the water passes through before the boi-media that removes particles. Cleaning the denitrifing...

New to this and need some good advice!

What kind (and how much) substrate are you using, and do you have any live rock? (eg. 4 -6" of DSB, Crushed coral,...) The LR and substrate are necessary for the bacteria that you need to establish (aka cycle). Although some bacteria will establish itself on your filter media, this typically...

    Bloody Murder!!!

Many good thoughts. I have Hermits, Emerald crabs, Horseshoe crabs and Sally Lightfoot crabs all of which are considerably smaller than the late Serpent Star. I am fairly sure that these were pulled off and not the result of a lr shift, but yes there is over 100 lbs of lr, so there are lots of...

    live rock from swf.com

Yep - I have had 2 different shipments of lr from swf (Figi type) both deliveries were top quality. Almos no die-off during shipping and plenty of life/growth/c. alge, etc. They have my certificat of approval :D

    Feather Duster Placement?

Based on our collegues input you can either burry them partially in the sand or set them up aganst the rock. Yes it is quite normal for them to retract. They eat very small particles in the water which are caught in their "feathers" then they pull the food down inside to start the digestion...

    Bloody Murder!!!

Ok, maybe I'm over reacting; but as I sit here and write this I am looking at 2 wriggiling legs that have been torn off of my serpant starfish. All that is in the tank is a 100+ gallon SWF "cleaning crew", 2 clown fish and 2 Damsels. Does anyone have any thoughts? Should I evacuate the house...

    BERLIN TURBO SKIMMER

No disrespect to the skimmer, but if you have not had one for 2 years an airstone and a fan would probably have removed sludge ;) lol ;)

    DSB Maintanence?

There is an interesting site that gives some detail to the composition and maintenance of DSB. I picked it up from a previous post on this board. http://www.rshimek.com/reef/sediment.htm

    Feather Duster Placement?

Is there a preferred way to place feather dusters in the tank (eg. prop against lr, "plant" in the sand, ...) What is your experience?

As a side point to this discussion; I have had 2 deliveries of lr from SWF recently. Even with the 2 day shipping, both deliveries had no detectable die-off.
