    Tank Grounding

Kind of ironic this got posted just now. I just got a shock from a lamp that was using the same power strip as my tank. It came on suddenly, I went to turn it off, and when I touched the switch, BZZZT!!! Ow! Salt had creaped into the switch.

    Crabs mixing, big and little?

I have had this problem with left-handed hermits only. When left-handeds get big, they get a nasty attitude. Both of mine that got big started knocking off my smaller and more peaceful red legs and blue legs. Luckily, hermits are really easy to remove.

    Help Wanted - New Person

Another thing - visit as many lfs (local fish stores) as you can. Ask questions but don't buy immediately. Compare their answers against each other. See if their tanks are well maintained and specimens are healthy. Some stores are more reliable than others, and a knowledgeable trustworthy...

    Anyone ever heard of this???

I had some of this. It's a really attractive macro algae. Unfortunately, I don't know much about keeping it cause when I bought it my snails (turbos) went hog wild and decimated their unintended treat in a couple of days.

anemone spat out a brown goo

I would guess that the brown goo is the undigested remains of a meal. Anemones don't have an *ahem* anus, so what goes in the mouth also comes out the mouth. White tips could be a symptom of not enough light, too much light, or that the anemone is warring with a neighbor. Also, it may just...

a little friend dies, please check my readings

Ammonia should be zero. What else do you have in your tank?

I think we're Growing Brine Shrimp......?

My guess is that they probably are a type of copepod. Some of them look a lot like brine shrimp. Brine shrimp aren't really found in reef enviroments naturally, so it's pretty unlikely that it came in with your live rock. Brine shrimp are actually from hypersaline lakes, like the Great Salt...

    tiny bubbles

I agree with Salty. Just wanted to add that it's called "valonia" if you were interested in more research.

i'm sure my anemone is dead. tell me please

Sorry to cut out in midsentance there - had some computer problems. What I was saying is that there isn't much that can be done to rescue an anemone, besides keeping good water parameters and hoping. You need to get him out of the tank if there are other inhabitants so that the dying anemone...

i'm sure my anemone is dead. tell me please

Yup, dead or dying. If you have a quarantine tank you might want to rinse him in saltwater, and put him in that tank to see if it will recover. There's not much you can do to rescue

    Little anemones

Anemonia majano is a pest in a reef tank!! In my experience, peppermints won't touch them. I've had an outbreak in one of my reef tanks, and they just reproduce like rabbits, and sting corals. Other than that, they are kind of attractive. The same thing is true of aptaisia. Spreads and...

    splitting bubble tip anemones?!?!?!?!

Congratulations, you just had a baby!! It's totally normal if the anemone is happy, and is a great sign! Just treat the new one as you treated the old one. Feed on your regular schedule. It's amazing to me how anemones split and don't seem any worse for wear within hours!!

strange sponge coral in my tank......HELP

fishinchick, first off, I've got no idea what these things are. Since you live in SoCal - assuming LBC area, you should go check out the Cabrillo Aquarium in San Pedro. They have awesome tanks with Cali native species. I don't know if you will get a good response off this board, because...

    ritteri anemone

Yeesh! That sounds really bad to have had him like that for three days. Can you move him to a hospital tank of sorts so that if he does go, he doesn't take anything else with him?

    Is 30 gal gonna fit...?

I've got a 30 hex! It's a beautiful reef. I think you actually have more options with stacking live rock, because you have more angles to view it from. You get to design "in the round." My only regret with the hex is I filled it before I realized I should have it further out in the room so I...

    Is it dead?

Doesn't look like aiptaisia to me. Looks like a purple long tentacle anemone aka macrodactyla. What's that pinkish looking thing on the left? Feather duster? Anenome? Anenome sometimes curl up, especially in their first day in a new tank. Relax. Getting darker is a good sign. If it doesn't...

    Something new...!!??!!

It's a good sign! Your sand bed is doing it's job and converting nitrates into harmless nitrogen, and releasing it back into the atmosphere. If your getting a ton of bubbles, you may want to consider adding more sandsifters to turn over the bed a little more efficeintly.

    Hair algae

I absolutly agree with Salttrigger and 7up. The only thing I have to add is no, don't get the tang. You would just be treating the symptom, not the problem. If snails are always dying, and you have hair, there's a problem.

    unknown anemone

oops, didn't answer one of your questions: Don't worry about them nuking your tank. They are not poisonous when they die off. If you were to get rid of them using the kalkwasser method that @knight suggests (a good suggestion), you might not want to do them all at the same time. Do a handful...

    unknown anemone

yep, that's anemonia. Just so you know, they never get much bigger than the diameter of a quarter, and they will reproduce by lateral fission - ie splitting in half. It's no problem in a fish only, if you like the look. If you plan on having corals, you will want to get rid of them or at least...
