Should I frag him or not??

Hey Warren - just googled it "fragging bubble coral" - just splits with chisel and seperate the sections.

Should I frag him or not??

That is a Pearl Bubble Coral - it can be fragged - but I have never done one so I'm not exactly sure on proper technique - my guess would be cutting between the sections and seperating. Lets see if someone who knows these chimes in.

    Newbie setting up new tank

That filter is ok for starters but you will want to upgrade . Parameters should be SG 1.023-1.025 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate < 20 for FOWLR <10 for reef Calcium 400-500 When you do water changes you need to premix the water to the correct salinity and try to match the tank temperatur as well...

    Blueheaded Fairy Wrasse

proper acclimation is not just floating the bag in the water - that is merely temperatur acclimation - the conditions of the water are probably quite a bit different than they were in the LFS and the salinity at the LFS was probably several points lower also. You need to drip acclimate for the...

    Added Sand to my tank

with no filter media or pad the ultra fine particles are easily moved about by the water flow and thus it will take quite some time to settle you can: put a pad it to filter them out - wait it out - add some rock or other type of obstructions to allow settlement areas. best way is to filter it...

    please help clown choking!!!

best advice you have already received in the other forum - give it some time to clear it on his own unless he either stops breathing or starts laying down - your good intentions could otherwise kill him. He will probably do fine though

    please help clown choking!!!

Can you visually verify that there is something in his mouth? How big is he ? Trying to remove it can be risky - it's like doing a surgical procedure doubling the risk due to the stress factor. Are his gills moving and is he swimming about?

    Another Basic Q

did you dry clean it or try to wipe it off with a wet rag?

    Another Basic Q

It may be some "salt creep" if you had been working in the tank and splashed a little water on it as the water evaporates the salt expands and creeps out. Just clean the area with a dry towel and keep an eye on it for a couple of days.

    basic question.

After 16 days I would think it's too late to think about taking the fish back - lucky they've survived. What are your parameters and what else is in the tank?

    brown alage

Those are diatom algae blooms - if your cycle is complete then you will need to do water changes to get your nitrates down to 20 or less - you should also decrease the length of the lighting cycle.

    gph????????????

Yes that will do nicely - recommended turnover rate is 10x and the flow rate is 20x - so you are right in that ball park.

    can you frag a star

A friend of mine recently rebuilt his tank setup and accidentally took a leg off a brittle star - this was approx. two weeks ago - the leg is still moving around in the tank - I don't think it is possible for it to clone in a captive environment - but I will certainly keep an eye on this one.

    LFS Recommendations

Ketill - appreciate the input - but I'm only going to be down in the LA area (san fernando valley) want to check out some of the better stores - I know that there were tons of them when I lived out there.

    New Parameters

They are not likely to go back up - unless you introduce some new decaying matter - the bacteria will find a balance for the level of nutrients in the tank (up to a certain degree) depending on your filtration and turnover rates. This, of course, assumes that you do not put more biolaod in the...

    Cycle through! ID this please

As far as the CC being enough - IMO - no - I would like to see you get more nassarius and ten turbos to start. The nassarius will clean the substrate and help to aerate it also as they burrow. The turbos will clean the glass and rocks - so that is a lot of ground to cover for only 5 of them. I...

    Cycle through! ID this please

the brown stuff is diatom algae bloom which is perfectly normal and expected in a newer tank - you may have these blooms occur for years to come until you reach that perfect balnce in the system and get a good lighting and feeding scedule down too. The turbo snails and astreas will both eat it...
