Yeah kent sells something called the AquaDose.. it is very easy to use and very cheap. I use a small one for Kalk on my setup... only I have to fill it up every night before I go to bed cause it only holds a liter of water and I have a 60 gal that evaporates like a 100 gallons of water a day...

i've been doing lots of pricing for pre-built units and I must say that seems a little high for the amount of light you are getting. I am no expert on high end lighting though.

I've never heard of anything like that... of course adding anything to your tank IMO can lead to problems if it isn't closely monitored. If you are concerned then do a series of water changes to alleviate the problem. My guess is that it won't hurt anything... keep your eye on your fish.. they...

I am thinking VHO. With maybe a 150 watt MH bulb. Possibly a three lamp 36" setup that would give me about 285 watts (not including the MH if I go that route) w/ 10k a 6,500k and an actinic. That would give me just under 5 watts per gallon with money to spare. I also need to consider cooling...

the best thing to do is get a whole lotta base rock (lace rock works and is avail at many LFS) and then add like 10 pounds or so of LR. I skipped the LS and bought southdown as I just couldn't spend the 100 bucks to fill my tank with LS. Now I have about 75 pounds of rock and 3-4 inches of sand...

cool.. yeah my rockwork extends up to about 4-6 inches below the top of the water line... would that be close enough? the PC light is maybe 7-12 inches above the rocks... roughly i haven't measured it.

looks good! is that a corner tank? if so that was my first tank... you'll be happy with it but the size of the hood and the amount of space under the tank leaves a lot to be desired... i ended up making a custom hood and putting a 96w powerquad in... although I wish I would have gone with a 175w...

If you just put the LR and LS in then make sure you have some water movement (power heads) and yeah, sit back and wait for about 4 weeks. That's the short answer... do a search for 'The Cycle' and you'll learn more.

In that case it could be cyno... which is not really an algae but a bacteria... lights giving out the wrong spectrum (or lights that are older... they need to be replaced every so often even if they don't burn out because they lose their potency). Do a search on Red Slime and you will get some...

JEBO makes some pretty cheap stuff so that was probably it. You get what you pay for though, their lighting systems are cheap as anything but I'm afraid they would burn my house down

yeah if you are getting LR and LS then you should not need the shrimp IMO.

Could be diatoms?? New tanks experience this when they are first setup, it is normal.
