    Skimmer Question

I agree with the above reply. You would be better off upgrading to a single, bigger skimmer rather than adding a smaller one. The more water volume you have, the taller the reaction chamber (air bubble chamber) needs to be and the more powerful the pump running the skimmer needs to be. You could...

HELP! I am such a dork and perhaps homicidal!

You really should not have to do anything. If that rock was already cultured it should be able to handle that tiny bit of ammonia relatively quickly unless it was dry for an extended period of time (24 hours or more). Ammonia is poisonous to fish and invertebrates, but 0.2 ppm is very low and...

    Wavemaker ?

No, you will not need to lower the water level. It doesn't produce large waves perse on the top of the water, but it does within the water column. The deeper you place the unit in the tank the less surface agitation there is, so you have to find a happy medium. The top of my unit sits about...

    maxi jet kit

The wattage from the pumps is not a concern as far as money goes - if you can afford saltwater tanks I would certainly hope you can afford your electric bill. The wattage is a concern when you consider that all of the wattage from you pumps translates to heat being added to your water 24/7 and...

    Coral life span question

I agree with the above - corals are in essence immortal because in the proper environment they reproduce so fast that by the time an individual polyp dies hundreds or thousands have been created to replace it. Something else happened in your system that caused that mass die out.

Recommended stock for a 5 gallon reef tank...

Yellow watchman goby, blackcap basslet, or a royal gramma. My yellow watchman goby rarely ever leaves a 3" x 3" section in my 24 DX cube and I am inclined to believe he would live happily in a pickle jar if there was a small cave for him to chill in.

    maxi jet kit

I think modding the 900 is the smart way to go - sure you are sacrificing a small amount of flow, but for the savings in wattage it is priceless. Five pumps at 8.5 watts each is going to make a huge difference in the summer than five pumps at 20 watts each. With a well designed system you can...

Looking to upgrade lighting in 12g Nano-cube Deluxe

Keeping the hood on would make things really difficult because the extra heat generated by anything more powerful for lights would need some very powerful fans to cool the hood as well. It would be much easier and cheaper to go topless and get a pod type light or a pendant.

    Wavemaker ?

Right on man! It took many hours tinkering with it to get it quiet and my tank is currently cycling, but I cannot believe how much water this thing pushes - it is unreal. I cannot wait to see what the fish and corals do in reaction to this much turbulence and it is awesome that there is no...

Best Home in Sink RO/DI system.

DI is a necessity - a RO membrane will allow nitrates, phosphates, ammonia, copper, etc. to pass through into the final product. DI filters out what the RO doesn't and you need it.

Do Reef Hermit Crabs eat hair algea?

Sea hares are a good option too, but they usually eat themselves out of a house and home because they are so voracious and grow so fast.

    eel in a reef?

You can, but it would be a serious PITA. If they get hungry they will eat your fish/shrimp and they grow fast and will knock over rocks all the time: scratching your aquarium and dumping corals under the sand.
