I wouldn't freak on the crushed coral untill you start to see problems. It's not the best thing out there to use, but don't go through a ton of trouble at the moment I say.

Use egg crate to keep them from jumping out if you don't want to use glass tops. As far as reasoning for jumping out could be multiple reasons. It could have been frightened or chased by anbother fish. Especially if they were a pair because mate will chase each other around & what not while mating.

I have no experience with the metal halides, but since no one has answered yet I'll say something about Coralife fixturs. I have a freshwater dual T-5 Coralife fixture & I love it & seems to be extremely good quality.
