    Return pump electrical buzz

Well I cleaned it out and now it's making a different sound. I guess this is progress  . At very least it appears to be moving a lot more water now so I guess the cleaning was much needed! -leigh

    Anemones

May I suggest that if you really want a host for a future clown--consider feather dusters. They're not a coral--and so are a little easier to keep in a new tank--and I've seen many a clown happily host in a feather duster cluster. (And they're purty :) )

    Copper testing

I've never used the salifert copper test, but they make good test kits so I'd assume it'll work fine. Any copper level is fatal to inverts. You might get lucky and find a few super tough snails or crabs that can cope but for the most part it'll wipe out your invert population :( Nothing to...

    Return pump electrical buzz

Hey... For the past couple days my return pump (an aquaclear CAP-2200) has had a fairly loud (and getting louder) electrical humming sound...it doesn't look like there's anything stuck in it and it's still pumping fine. Any suggestions?

    Safe area for DSB critters?

Kip, I know this sounds freaky, but somehow or other I even got worms into my invert tank from the reef! (Maybe they hitched a ride in a hermit's shell or something)...but you're right, I certainly wouldn't bet on a worm making it through a pump!

what do you think of my idea??

yeah, put base rock in a tank with good flow with live rock for a few months and it'll become 'live' rock. (it will though of course cause a cycle which is why you want a separate curing tank, not a tank with fish in it)

what do you think of my idea??

Caulerpa doesn't need intense lighting, but it will appreciate it 24/7. Your cheap fw lights should work just fine. (You may want to get some new bulbs down the road, but really, cheap lights are fine for caulerpa). I think you'd have a hard time getting by on sand alone. But it's going to...

    Safe area for DSB critters?

Definitely put it in the fuge--don't worry about them getting back and forth from the fuge to the main tank--they will. When I set up my invert tank it was all on 'dead' sand and base rock--within days i had creepy crawlies all over the place that had found their way in from the reef and were...

Water Changes Every Day....What Do You Think?

Even if time isn't an issue, daily water changes just seem like they'd get annoying. As Sammy said big water changes are more likely to 'shock' a system. I'm a fan of 5% weekly water changes.

    just great...the dreaded mantis!!

Definitely sounds like one...mine was so subtle I honestly thought it was just a powerhead mechanical clicking I was hearing since I had it ever since I started up my tank. I was wrong. Good luck!

    just great...the dreaded mantis!!

PhoenixRising, where were you when I was looking for a good home for the one I caught!!! Seriously though, clarkiiboi, I found frozen plankton to be a very effective lure if that helps at all... -leigh

Thankyou all who helped last night (update)

I still think it may have just been the little edge that pushed things out of whack. It really sounds like you did your best to control everything as much as possible--and I know you inherited this tank--I just think it's previous owner stretched it on bioload (standard rule of thumb is 1 inch...

Thankyou all who helped last night (update)

So sorry to hear about your bum luck. In reading over your previous messages here is my hypothesis (in no way am I trying to be tang police or pin guilt--I'm just giving a run down hypothesis to try to explain timing and such)...I can certainly relate to the sadness as I had my own cucumber...

    Lost another tang ?

RegalDragon sounds like you have a mantis. Does it look like you have some crushed shells too that hermits once inhabited? (ie typical signs of a 'smasher' mantis) LeBoeuf--sounds like you could definitely have a slasher. As you're beefing up your corals watch where you stick your fingers...

    Lost another tang ?

could be a mantis--heard any clicking? lost any inverts? (as i understand it a mantis prefers an easier kill and will go after inverts before fish)... i know this is gruesome but what do the fish look like killed? are they intact or do they look as if they have been 'slashed'...do you have...

How do you know when to change light Bulbs??

How Many Dogs Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb? Afghan: Light bulb? What light bulb? American Bulldog: JUMP, remove bulb, land. JUMP, replace bulb, land. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle.... Basenji: LIGHT BULB? We don't change no stinking light...

    Alge

You gotta give people more than 8 minutes to respond. Personally I don't add any chemicals if I don't fully understand what they do. Hair algae is eliminated regularly through natural means so I see no reason to resort to mystery chemicals.

    Skimmer question

shouldn't be a problem that i know of after all skimmers only remove junk that is there to be removed--if it fits in your tank and the flow rate isn't too looney i say do it. some people think it's possible to 'overskim' a tank--i'm not one of those people :D
